Relational Domains and the Interpretation of Reciprocals

چکیده
Expressions like know and stand on are standardly analyzed as denoting binary relations between entities. Sentence (1) can be paraphrased by requiring that every element of the set {Mary,Sue,Jane} is in the know relation with every other element of this set. By contrast, in sentence (2) an analogous interpretation is highly unlikely. We describe the contrast in Figure 1, modeling binary relations using directed graphs (Tutte 2001). In sentence (1) the know relation is required to constitute a complete directed graph (possibly with loops) over the three entities for Mary, Sue and Jane. Sentence (2) is true when the graph described by the stand on relation is not complete but constitutes a directed path. Similar variations in the interpretation of reciprocal sentences have repeatedly been demonstrated in the literature.1

Truth in the Context of Christian Faith and its Relation to Other Religions
In the following reflections on the understanding of truth in regard to Christian faith (or even in regard to religious faith, experience, and language in general), I advocate a relational interpretation of truth. Truth in that sense is understood not primarily as an intellectual assertion but as a qualification of a dynamic, existential, personal relation. Truth is the trustworthiness of that ...
متن کاملWhat Does the Strongest Meaning Hypothesis Mean?
The variety of interpretations exhibited by sentences with reciprocals is a longstanding challenge for semantic and pragmatic theories. This puzzle is related to some hard questions about the interpretation of plural predicates in general. In this paper we study the implications of relations between reciprocity and plurality for the account of reciprocals in Dalrymple et al. (1994). It will be ...
متن کاملDistributed Leadership in Tehran’s Elementary Schools: A Qualitative Exploration of Cultural Domains
In order to explore the cultural domains of Tehrani elementary schools vis-à-vis distributed leadership, a sample of 16 teachers, 8 assistant principals, and 8 principals was selected purposefully from districts 2, 6, and 11. The informants were interviewed in a semi-structured fashion. Data analyses revealed 19 main factors upon which a model for the cultural domains of the elementary schools...
متن کاملTreeKs: A Functor to Make Numerical Abstract Domains Scalable
Relational numerical abstract domains do not scale up. To ensure a linear cost of abstract domains, abstract interpretation-based tools analyzing large programs generally split the set of variables into independent smaller sets, sometimes sharing some non-relational information. We present a way to gain precision by keeping fully expressive relations between the subsets of variables, whilst ret...
